My Heroes Have Always Been Monsters Part 23

When I was a teenager and trying to track down various horror films I'd heard were good, Argento was a name I kept hearing but never found, not until I was in college when I finally found a cut version of Susperia.
Since then I've been a massive fan, eagerly anticipating new releases and collecting the old.
Argento's films are technically brilliant-the lighting, the angles, the sets. All gorgeous. The stories themselves can be hit or miss-expecting the audience to accept A LOT sometimes, but with the exception of Phantom of the Opera I have never seen an Argento film I didn't love on some level.
I've argued with plenty of people over whether or not Argento is a good director and/or makes good films, but I stand by his work and highly recommend  everything except Phantom of the Opera (not to be confused with his superior Terror at the Opera aka Opera), I mean, watch it, it won't kill you, but for me I just wasn't feeling it.
Any who, here's a gallery of movie posters/vhs/dvd covers. There's a couple missing yes. One I've never seen and one is Phantom. Also I forgot the awesome Jenifer and pretty good Pelts from the Masters of Horror series.
There should be a book to cover everything there is to tell about Dario and in fact there is, it's called Broken Mirros/Broken Minds by Maitland McDonagh and it's a must read if you're a film buff, obsessed with these movies, or just wondering WTF?
Probably the best of his 70's films, Four Flies on Gray Velvet.
Cool and weird and scary, can't say a bad thing about it.
 The first mother.
 The second mother.
 Excellent, a must see.
Maybe my favorite, depends on the day. Flawless.
Hello, young Jennifer Connelly! I heard she hates this film. Weird. It's the best thing I've seen her in except Requiem for a Dream.
I got into an argument in a video store with a clerk over this one. Yes, I have a problem with a part of the climax, but it's still a strong film.
Two short films based on Poe's work, one directed by Romero. Argento also produced Romero's Dawn of the Dead.
Sometimes wonky, but overall quite good.
Starring Max Von Sydow. Excellent.
 Why, yes I do.
The third mother.
Still waiting to see this one. Heard bad things, don't care, gonna watch it anyway.
Can't wait! This has got to be wacky as hell.

...And to wrap up, here's a nasty scene from Tenebre!

So I Was Just Over At Bloody Disgusting And...Oh My!

And you'll wanna go there and see the new trailer!

New Flick Time

This is fun...Killer School Girls From Outer Space!
And now you wanna see the whole thing...well go to

This takes me back to the good old days of going into the video store, renting a flick I've never heard of with a title that was suspect at best and being entertained off my ass!

Exploding Toy Box

I am not happy about missing out on this; Zombie Viper Cobra Trooper for GI Joe's 30th anniversary. I would really dig finding this for a decent price. Checked a couple of my usual sources and I'm looking at $30. Um no. Not for a 3.75 in GI Joe, but this is a great figure!

The Law Is Coming!

So how are we feeling about what we've seen of the new Judge Dredd?
I am looking forward to seeing this, by the look of the clips it seems they've knocked it out of the park. I really want this to do well, if for no other reason than to get a sequel with the Dark Judges. I'd have a nerdgasm seeing Judge Death on screen without CGI.

King Vulture's Sound Attack

Beneath The Wheel by DRI from the excellent Thrash Zone album!
Thrash Zone was a big album for me. It was the last metal album I really got into before I threw myself headlong into punk, which is ironic since DRI started as a hardcore punk band that crossed over to metal. The follow up, Definition, is also top notch and if you're interested in the early days grab Dealing With It, but eventually you'll wind up with everything.

Out Today...

  • The Theatrical Version and the Television Cut with added footage not seen in the theatrical version
  • Audio commentary with director Rick Rosenthal
  • Audio commentary with stunt co-ordinator/actor Dick Warlock
  • The Nightmare Isn’t Over – The Making Of Halloween II, featuring Rick Rosenthal, Lance Guest, Dick Warlock, Alan Howarth, Dean Cundey and more..
  • Horror’s Hallowed Grounds: Revisiting the original shooting locations
  • Still Gallery
  • Theatrical Trailer, TV and Radio Spots

  • Audio Commentaries — In the first track, director Tommy Lee Wallace is joined by fans Robert V. Galluzzo from Icons of Fright and Sean Clark of Horror Hound magazine. The discussion is mostly a Q&A commentary as Rob and Sean keep instigating Wallace to keep talking while also interjecting a few choice remarks in between by Rob and Sean. Although not very engaging with a few pockets of silence, there is a very good deal of insightful information being related, mostly on the cast, origins of several ideas and locations.

In the second audio track, documentary filmmaker and producer of the DVD Michael Felsher sits down with actor Tom Atkins. More entertaining and lighthearted than the first, the two men clearly enjoy each other's company while talking about the movie's legacy and a bit on its history. There's nary a moment of silence as Atkins shares lots of great memories and his eventual involvement with this production. Of the two, this is arguably the better, but they're both honestly good commentaries with a great fan-made appeal to them.

  • Stand Alone: The Making of Halloween III: Season of the Witch (HD, 33 min) — Presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the new retrospective documentary is a surprisingly frank discussion on the plot and the production. With several recent interviews of key players, everyone involved shares a wealth of great memories and anecdotes of the cast & crew while also giving honest critiques of the movie and characters. Comments of the finished product and its legacy towards the end are the highlight of the doc.

  • Horror's Hallowed Grounds: The Locations of Halloween III (HD, 20 minutes) — Sean Clark of Horror Hound magazine takes fans on an awesome tour of the various locations where the movie was filmed as they appear today with a great unexpected appearance from Wallace.

  • Still Gallery (HD) — A large collection of promotional pictures and production stills.

  • Publicity (1080i/60, HD) — Two TV spots, one commercial for the television premiere, a cool teaser and the original theatrical preview.

My Heroes Have Always Been Monsters Part 22

My first exposure to The Mummy came from the old Remco action figure and probably Scooby Doo. The first time I watched Universal's original film with Boris Karloff I have to admit I was pretty bored. I thought it was less creepy than Frankenstein or Dracula and not as cool as The Creature From The Black Lagoon. These days I have much more appreciation for the film, but I'd still like to see a truly kick ass horrifying take on The Mummy.

Probably the two best takes on the Mummy have been Hammer Films' starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and the incomparable Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho Tep.
